Natural Helpers of Zuni, with Vurlene BOWEKATY, retreat coordinator. (From The Shiwi Messenger - 4/30/99)
A group of young people in Zuni hopes to make a difference in many others' lives and their own. The Natural Helpers are a cross section of students and school adults selected from the Zuni Middle School. The Natural Helpers program is designed to provide services to youth who have problems in their lives: they strive to assist such youth in developing the capability to choose positive ways to take care of themselves. They also focus on projects they feel are needed to be undertaken in the community. The Natural Helpers and professional counselors recently held a three day retreat at The Inn At Halona during which they developed tighter bonds and committed themselves to new community projects. Governor Malcolm Bowekaty and  members of the Zuni Tribal Council attended sessions and encouraged the Natural Helpers to follow "business plans" in bringing their projects into realities, and they pledged to assist the Natural Helpers in their endeavors.
Happy conclusion of a successful retreat!

This feature is a part of a series of community information pages which are dedicated to "Special Guests" of The Inn At Halona
whose very presence in Zuni has been a "Special Gift" to our community.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, they illustrate that all our Guests,
traveling to Zuni for "work, meeting or visit" are people of high caliber.
